Thursday, May 22:
KTO Project & Voices of Zimbabwe:
Celebrating 20 Years of Friendship and Music

The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse
2020 Addison Street Berkeley, CA 94704

8pm show

We've been playing mbira, jamming on the marimbas, shaking the hosho (gourd rattles), playing mbira music on guitars and ukuleles, we've worked on our jiti drumming and we have been singing and dancing with over 30 people, including our friends from Zimbabwe and South Africa. And now we need…YOU!

Concerts are a success for two reasons: the music is moving, meaningful and/or uplifts in such a way that one can feel the reverberations for days to follow and there is an audience present and ready to receive this gift of music.

We are at the final stages of preparing for this very unique concert, and now we need…YOU! Please show your support by purchasing your ticket in advanced for this incredible night of both local and international artists, as we celebrate Zimbabwean music, friendship and more!

Talented musicians from various backgrounds are coming together to give you a musical snapshot of what it was like for Kelly in Zimbabwe and how she has continued to integrate this music into her own band, The KTO Project and in her teaching of choral music for the past 18 years. Musekiwa Chingodza has come all the way from Zimbabwe to bless us with his incredible mbira playing, singing, hosho playing, drumming …all while flashing us that incredible smile!

The local Zimbabwean community has also come out in solidarity with for this show and more than thirty people will be lifting their voices in song as we debut the Voices of Zimbabwe chorus!

Thank you so much for your presence at this show. If you cannot attend, won't you consider purchasing tickets as a sign that you support events like this at the Freight and Salvage? Contact Kelly for more information!

“Kelly Takunda Orphan has a delicious blend of traditional and contemporary ingredients in her work. She’s so satisfying.”
     — Keith Terry, Crosspulse.

kelly takunda orphan"Kelly Takunda Orphan has been on a long and wondrous musical journey beginning with her Armenian roots to the percussion driven music of West Africa, Zimbabwe and the Caribbean. This, her first recording, reveals a rare breed of musician who carefully and respectfully fuses together music of disparate cultures. The vocals are warm and lush-the rhythm tracks will make you want to dance!"

Linda Tillery
  singer, percussionist,
